For more that 110 years the YMCA has been a leader in aquatics and water safety. The first YMCA swimming pool was built in 1885, and the first YMCA lifesaving corps began in 1904, so aquatics has been a part of the Y from early in its history.

However, aquatics has continued to be an important program area over all these years because it has several benefits.

  • It serves the need of communities for a resource that teaches people water safety. Today, many Americans do not know how to swim, even though water recreation activities are on the increase, and thousands of people drown annually. Offering education in water skill and safety is even more important now that public schools have cut back on physical education and aquatic course offerings.
  • It offers a means for people of all ages to learn skills that build self-confidence and esteem. From preschoolers to adults, overcoming fears of the water and developing water and swimming skills is rewarding.
  • It provides a fun activity that children and families can share and enjoy
  • It promotes better health as a physical activity that can be performed throughout life.
